Nine-Month-Old Merve Undergoes Successful Surgery for Lymphangioma at Mersin University Hospital

Mustafa and Sedra Habbabi, who settled in Turkey after coming from Syria in 2012, welcomed their daughter Merve, who was born with a lymphangioma on her neck.

The cyst, which had grown to 7 cm over nine months, did not show any reduction despite interventional radiological procedures. Consequently, Dr. Kemal Koray Bal and his team from the Mersin University Department of Ear, Nose, and Throat successfully performed an operation to remove the cyst.

After three days of intensive care treatment, Merve was transferred to the ward and is recovering rapidly. Her father stated, "We would like to thank our doctor and the hospital staff for taking such good care of us. We are looking forward to the day we can leave here healthy with our daughter."

Experts note that lymphangioma is a congenital disease of the lymphatic system, which plays a role in the body's defense. It develops due to an unknown reason for the lack of connection between the lymphatic vessels and the venous system (which carries deoxygenated blood).

According to expert data, cystic lymphangioma, which occurs in 1 in 60,000 births, typically appears in the neck and armpit areas but can also be found in lesser frequency in breast tissue, abdomen, chest, eye socket, and extremities.
